CUB Students Prepare for College by Chris
Second semester of the 2009-2010 school year has started and for Communication Upward Bound seniors that means meeting new deadlines. They are applying for colleges and scholarships, filling out the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), writing essays, and deciding what college is right for them.
Seems stressful to say the least. To help the graduating CUB students, the CUB staff has taken time to schedule special college prep sessions for Cub seniors to come in at Elliot Hall on non-school days to work on some of these new challenges.
Danielle, a senior at Northeast Magnet, has found the work sessions to be helpful in her preparation for college.
“It gives me an opportunity and time to work on things that need to be done rather than procrastinating until the last minute,” said Danielle.
She is one of seven graduating CUB students who will be taking part in the bridge program this summer. The bridge program will act as a transition for CUB students from high school to college allowing them to take two college courses for credit at Wichita State University.
The CUB program pays the students’ tuition, books and housing for the eight-week, summer classes. Graduating CUB students are Chris, Danielle, Samantha, Josue, Shauntoray, Kristen, and Devon.
These seven will be the first high school seniors from the CUB program to graduate.
“It is a great honor to have seven students in the Communication Upward Bound program graduating from high school in May 2010,” said Wilma Moore-Black, Assistant Director and Curriculum Coordinator for Cub. “These students are role models and our instant success stores. They are embarking on a courageous journey to become the first person in their families to graduate from a four-year college and to pursue careers that are linked to post-secondary degrees. I am super proud and happy for each of the CUB seniors.”
Graduation commencement for Chris, Samantha, Devon, Kristen, and Josue is May 25 at the Charles Koch Arena. Danielle’s is May 25 at Century II and Shauntoray will graduate May 18 at the Charles Koch Arena. Five students will be graduating from South High, while the others complete their senior year at Southeast and Northeast Magnet.
